Quicio, second youth

With several thousand kms of competition behind him, without a serious injury, at 17 years, Quicio is enjoying his second youth.

His last race, for now, was in Xinzo, where he finished 120th on one of the hottest days ever.

Three years ago, Quicio ran his first race in Santa Susana and was eliminated at the end of the fifth stage. The horse was unsound, but we didn’t know the origin of the problem.

After many tests and x-rays, we discovered damage caused by a nail, the shoe was removed and the hoof cut open, disinfected and after a few months’ rest, he ran again. In 2011, we prepared him again for Santa Susana but at the last shoeing we had problems again. In the end we didn’t go to Barcelona.

In December 2012 we ruturned to Santa Susana. What would happen in this race?? And in the fourth phase we were not allowed to continue.

In January 2013 we decided to unshoe and start training with boots from Floating Boots and, from the first day, the change was spectacular. The horse stopped tripping – he tripped a lot – and started to tread with confidence, he had been scared before, even on good ground. His trot and general attitude improved. He was a different horse, safe, confident, comfortable – In Xinzo we tried glue-on boots and he trotted and cantered better than ever. We are so happy and satisfied that we took all of our horses’ shoes off.

The barefoot option is a compromise and also an insurance. We know how it is to train for months, then finally a shoe-related problem means not being able to compete or being eliminated in the first stages. Boots not only eliminate this problem, they also improve the health, functionality and performance of the horse.
